French Dinky 24S Simca 8 Cabriolet

The French Dinky Simca 8 Cabriolet. Through its life The Simca 8 Sports Cabriolet had a few variations in the mold as well as in color and wheels.

It always had white plain rubber tires, cast glossy exterior with open windshield and matte interior with cream steering wheel. Hubs were always ridged and convex. The base plate was black sheet metal with the name and manufacturer embossed in it and the number 24S.The known variations are:

  • 1952: Plain cast wheels, thin screen, black body and tan interior.
  • 1953-1954: Plain cast wheels, thin screen, black/red or grey/red.
  • 1955-1956: Chromed cast wheels, thin screen, black/red or grey/red.
  • 1957-1958: Chromed cast wheels, thick screen, black/red. grey/red.
  • 1959: Chromed cast wheels, thick screen, light blue-green or cream/red body and red interior.
Unusual color samples: Chromed cast wheels, thick screen, bright red body and white interior or pink body and tan interior. These last are very rare and expensive. Probably made in the last year of production. In 1959, the number of the Simca 8 Sports changed to 534 until its deletion in 1960. available in grey. black, red, pink finish. French Dinky 33A Simca Cargo

The French Dinky Simca Cargo. Despite the advertisement in the 1955 French Dinky catalogue that the Simca Cargo truck would be a new arrival during April, the model went on sale virtually unannounced. The Meccano Magazine briefly acknowledged its introduction in the June edition of the magazine and the model only featured on the colourful back page in July. This amazingly low-key launch seriously underplayed the significance of a model and series of trucks intended to replace the out-dated 25 series, which was suffering falling sales. The old Ford ‘Poissy’, upon which the 25 series was based was itself being replaced by the revolutionary new Ford Cargo, which was soon to be re-named the Simca Cargo, when Ford-SAF sold its business to Simca.

When French Dinky Introduced the Simca Cargo truck, 33A, the 133mm long model cost an estimated 550 old francs, about 11/-. The trucks Olive Green cab and chassis had a citron-orange box body with two opening doors at the rear. This version of the truck had a shim with a spare tyre, but did not have the towing hook that appeared on the later Bailly Simca Cargo, 33AN. The wheel hubs were ribbed and convex and had large, black, smooth tyres. The Simca Cargo model sold in individual yellow boxes, which were subsequently used for the Bailly Simca Cargo, 33AN. The 33A model’s life was relatively short-lived, being withdrawn in favour of the Bailly Simca Cargo, in 1956.

Early in the 1950s, Ford extended and modernised its range of trucks and the Ford 5 tonnes was born. Its revolutionary design introduced the concept of the cab over engine, e-cab, which lies behind the look of numerous modern vehicles. In July 1954, Simca took-over the Ford operation and re-branded the vehicle. The truck had a V8 gasoline engine, producing 15HP. However, the gearbox was not synchronised and required the driver to double de-clutch and fuel consumption was 32 litres per 100 km at 50 km/h. From 1959, the Simca Cargo, now built at UNIC plants had a 4.2 litre V8 engine and a synchronised gearbox. The French army purchased over 14,000 of these vehicles, many of which were the later 4x4 model.

Introduced in April 1955, replaced by the Bailly Simca Cargo, 33AN, and deleted in 1956. available in green & orange finish. French Dinky 33A in detail...

French Dinky 35A Simca 5 Topolino

The French Dinky Simca 5 Topolino. In 1939, French Dinky launched the 60mm long Simca 5, Topolino, (35a). The casting at a scale of 1:55 moulded details of the model into its one piece shell. With either white of black hubs and rubber tyres, the model cost 125 fr. (old francs), about 2/6. Between 1940 and 1948, the price remained, even though the wheels became black metal. After 1948, the black wheel hubs had solely black tyres. The bodywork, doors, hatches, vents, grille and headlights are embossed. Ultimately, the Simca 5, Topolino, was deleted in 1949.

Designed by Fiat and known in Italy as the Topolino, the Franco-Italian, SIMCA 5, was built in Nanterre between 1939 and 1948. The in line 570cc engine produced a remarkable fuel consumption of 110km on only 5 litres of petrol. The car had a four speed gearbox, independent suspension, drum brakes and a 12v electrical system. Pre-war production slowed due to industrial action and German occupation. Eventually, the car was delisted in 1949 and replaced by the SIMCA 6.

available in grey, red, dark green, royal blue, yellow, gold, silver and brown finish at 1:55 scale. French Dinky 35A in detail...

French Dinky 1450 Simca 1100 Police Car

The French Dinky Simca 1100 Police Car. Introduced in 1977, French Dinky manufactured the SIMCA 1100 Police car in Spain, where it was designated 1450E. The 92mm length reflected that of the SIMCA 1100 Berline (saloon) 1407, introduced in 1968. The cost of the Police car, 18 new francs, about 18/-, some 6 francs above the standard Berline, reflected its plastic glass windows, suspension, opening engine and boot, matt green engine, black and white livery badged with POLICE on either side, blue light on the roof and its concave wheel hubs with treaded tyres. The model came with one of 7 number plates, white letters and numbers on a black background at both face and rear. French Dinky allocated the plate 7316 UG 75 to the French market, while 4212 BM 93 denoted models sold in Spain. Both box and vehicle recorded the place of manufacture as, Spain, although boxes for French versions also carried an additional sticker to show that these imported models complied with French law. French Dinky deleted the model in 1978.

The model of the SIMCA 1100 Police car was based on one of France’s most popular cars, with over 100,000 produced annually. In design from 1961-67, the SIMCA 1100 was France’s first front wheel drive vehicle. The car was road tested in Normandy and launched in Sardinia and at the Paris Motor Show in 1967. At this point, Chrysler Corporation, SIMCA’s new American owners chose to replace the traditional swallow logo with the Chrysler Pen-star and the 1100 was the first SIMCA vehicle to carry the new badge. Chrysler named the vehicle after its highly successful, Poissy-built 1118cc engine. The front-wheel drive hatchback came in a 3 and 5-door version, an estate car, and as 2 and 3 door vans. In no small measure, the vehicle’s success came from its innovative engineering, reflected in the use of disc brakes, rack and pinion steering, torsion-bar suspension and the provision of radial tyres. Together, these fittings made the SIMCA 1100 a remarkably advanced small family car and it is rumoured that Volkswagen studied the car when designing the VW Golf. SIMCA produced a number of sporty variants, which drew the attention of the French Police, who used it to patrol Europe’s busiest motorway, The Paris Peripherique. Ultimately, the Talbot Horizon replaced the SIMCA 1100. available in white & black finish. French Dinky 1450 in detail...
